Makalu, a 5th highest mountain in the world, (Alt 8421m.)  is situated between the Everest and Kanchanjanga range.  Its located in far east of Nepal and border with trans-Himalaya range. Generally, you will take a flight to Tumlingtar or you can also go by bus drive from Kathmandu. Basically, you will start to walk from Tumlintar on the way up to Makalu base camp trek you will cross many local villages such as a  Seduwa, Thasi Gaoun, Kauma dada and finally you will cross  Keke-la pass over the 4200m high then you will reach another side of a mountain landscape. After you will continue up to base camp another few days more and celebrate to reach base camp and explore around then you will return back to Tumlingtar from a different route,  but you will meet the same trail at dobato as you went up.

This region is surrounded by Hindus & Buddhist culture.  Inhabitants of Chhetri, Magar, Rai in a lower part of a trek and the uphill is surrounded by Sherpa inhabitant. Early in this trek route, there is a temple called Manakamana where thousands of pilgrims come to visit every year.

Short Itinerary

Day 01: Arrive in Kathmandu & transport to your hotel, Altitude 1350m.

Day 02: Fly or Drive to Tumlingtar or flight 1 hour and drive 6 hours, Alt 512m.

Day 03: Trek to Seduwa for 5 hours, Altitude 1650m.

Day 04: Trek to Tashi Gaun for 4-5 hours, Altitude 2200m.

Day 05: Trek to Khongma Dada for 6-7 hours, Altitude 3500m.

Day 06: Trek over Keke la pass-ascend to Tutu La pas & descend to Dobato for 8-9 hours, Keke la pass ‘altitude 4200m, Tutu la pass ‘altitude 4500m and Dobato ‘altitude 3610m.

Day 07: Trek to Yangre Kharka for 6-7 hours, Altitude 3520m.

Day 08: Trek to Jark Kharka for 5-6 hours, Altitude 4200m.

Day 09: Trek to Makalu base camp for 4 hours, Altitude 5000m.

Day 10: Excursion around Makalu base camp, Altitude 5000m.

Day 11: Trek to Yangre Kharka for 6 hours, Altitude 3520m.

Day 12: Trek to Dobato for 6 hours, Altitude 3610m.

Day 13: Trek to Kauma Danda for 5 hours, Altitude 3500m.

Day 14: Trek to Seduwa for 7-8 hours, Altitude 1650m.

Day 15: Trek to Num for 5 hours, Altitude 1600m.

Day 16: Drive to Tumlingtar for  6 hours, Altitude 950m.

Day 17: Drive back to Kathmandu for 4-5 hours.

Day 01: Arrive in Kathmandu & transport to your hotel, Altitude 1350m.

When you arrive at Tribhuwan International airport our representative will be there to receive you from the airport and shift to the hotel. If we do have some time then we will visit Gautam Holidays office. In the evening, there will be the welcome dinner organized by the Gautam holidays where you will be served with excellent Nepali cuisine which will introduce you to the countries food culture. Overnight at hotel.

Day 02: Fly or Drive to Tumlingtar or flight 1 hour and drive 6 hours, Alt 512m.

We will take a flight to Tumlingtar after having breakfast and meet the rest of the members who will also be joining us for the trek. Overnight in Chichira.

Day 03: Trek to Seduwa for 5 hours, Altitude 1650m.

We will be trekking through the forests and terraced farms to Barun River. We will cross the river and follow an equally steep ascent up the other side again. Often quite hot the forest on the valleys offer a bit of shade. This is where Makalu Barun National Park begins and where we register our permits. We camp right at the top of the village. Overnight in Seduwa.

Day 04: Trek to Tashi Gaun for 4-5 hours, Altitude 2200m.

Ascend the ridge bounded by the Ipsuwa Khola on the west and Kasuwa Khola to the east. Crossing the hillside through quiet villages and passing by small paddy fields, we reach the exotic village of Tashi Gaon. Once there, we are surrounded by breathtaking Himalayan panorama. Overnight in Tashigaon.

Day 05: Trek to Khongma Dada for 6-7 hours, Altitude 3500m.

This will be a bit of a tough day as we have to walk on a steep trail in higher elevation. We will rise done forests to a stream and then onto a ridge. It’s a short way down to Khongma Danda. Overnight in Khongma Danda.

Day 06: Trek over Keke la pass-ascend to Tutu La pas & descend to Dobato for 8-9 hours, Keke la pass ‘altitude 4200m, Tutu la pass ‘altitude 4500m and Dobato ‘altitude 3610m.

Climb towards the summit of the Shipton La (pass) which takes a few hours to reach. After the lake Kalo Pokhari (3930m), pass over the Keke La at 4,170m.  We can see the marvelous views of Chamlang (7321m), Peak 6 (6,524m) and Peak 7 (6,758m). After crossing the Keke La pass, we descend through the beautiful valley to Dobate. Overnight in Dobate.

Day 07: Trek to Yangre Kharka for 6-7 hours, Altitude 3520m.

From Dobate, we pass over the rhododendron forest which indications to the Barun River and the upper spreads of the valley. We should be very alert during the first two hours of a trek as the trail is steep and arduous. Overnight at Yangri Kharka.

Day 08: Trek to Jark Kharka for 5-6 hours, Altitude 4200m.

We will be following a moderate walk to the valley, we pass through yak pastures, lush forests and boulder fields. The valley walls tower impressively above us during the start of the trek.  We will pass Merek as we make our way further up and notice a significant rise in the scenic Himalayan views.

Day 09: Trek to Makalu base camp for 4 hours, Altitude 5000m.

Today is the day we make it to the Base Camp. From Langmale Kharka we make our way up to Shershong and eventually to Makalu Base Camp. The trail is flat with icy glaciers and snow clad mountains accompanying us. Mount Makalu arises into view as we tactic Shershong. As we make our way to the camp, we get to soak in the grand Himalayan panorama nearby us. Overnight at Makalu Base Camp.

Day 10: Excursion around Makalu base camp, Altitude 5000m.

The Base Camp is a stony unfertile place with the big Barun Glacier outside it. From here we can see the wonderful south face of Makalu and the whole panorama of Everest and Lhotse. We can sightsee the surrounding lakes, glaciers and go for a short trek up where we may have fun our achievement at the camp itself. Overnight at Makalu Base Camp.

Day 11: Trek to Yangre Kharka for 6 hours, Altitude 3520m.

We descend down from the base camp and take our last glimpse of Makalu before turning the corner and heading back. On our mode depressed, we pass through Shershong, Langmale Kharka, Merek and fall away down the valley lastly ending at Yangri Kharka. Overnight at Yangri Kharka.

Day 12: Trek to Dobato for 6 hours, Altitude 3610m.

From Yangri Kharka we fall away through rock falls, green forests and valley, making our way to Dobate. We follow the river banks of Barun as we descend down the trail. Overnight at Dobate.

Day 13: Trek to Kauma Danda for 5 hours, Altitude 3500m.

We begin the trek with a steep climb from Dobate to Mumbuk (Nambuk) and through a forest of firs and rhododendrons. We then cross the Keke La, Tutu La (Shipton’s Pass) and Kauma La en route. Next, we descend to Khongma Danda again. Overnight in Khongma Danda.

Day 14: Trek to Seduwa for 7-8 hours, Altitude 1650m.

We retrace our steps as we exit the Makalu Barun National Park and descend down to the Barun River. We then cross the hillside and trek through the villages and settlements as we travel further down lastly stopping at Seduwa again. Overnight at Seduwa.

Day 15: Trek to Num for 5 hours, Altitude 1600m.

We consent Seduwa and trek over lush forests towards Num. The trail goes up and down and passes through dense forests and Sherpa villages as we move downwards. Overnight at Num.

Day 16: Drive to Tumlingtar for 6 hours, Altitude 950m.

Again we retrace our footsteps to Chichira from where we can savor the glorious vista of Mount Makalu for the last time. The last arrival leg of the trek will see us overnight at Tumlingtar, prepared for an early departure to Kathmandu the following day. Overnight at Tumlingtar.

Day 17: Drive back to Kathmandu for 4-5 hours.

Our trip to Nepal comes to an end today. We will drive back to Kathmandu after our long trek in the mountains. We can rest and relax throughout the day at our hotel or get in touch with our loved ones. In the evening we celebrate our fruitful trip to the Makalu base camp and back with a farewell dinner. Overnight in Kathmandu.
